  2. Name the commas: Moving from right to left, the first comma is "thousand", the second is "million", and the third is "billion".
  3. Read each group: Starting from the left, read the digits in front of the first comma exactly as you would a normal one-, two-, or three-digit number.
  4. Say the comma's name: Say the period name (million, thousand) when you reach the comma.
  5. Repeat: Continue reading the next group of numbers and its comma until you reach the end. The final ones period does not get a name spoken aloud.


When writing numbers in words, always place a comma in the text wherever there is a comma in the standard digits. Additionally, use a hyphen to connect compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine (for example, "forty-seven").
